Coach of the Year!

LSU football coach, Les Miles, was honored with the title "Coach of the Year," by the Associated Press this week. This comes after Miles led the Tigers to a perfect 13-0 season and an SEC Championship. The Tigers will face the Alabama Crimson Tide in the BCS National Championship on January 9, 2012. Coach Miles received 30 votes from AP Poll voters to beat out Kansas State coach, Bill Snyder, who got 16 votes. This is the first time coach Miles has received this reward and the second time that a LSU coach has gotten it. The first time was Nick Saban who won it with the  Tigers in 2003. There is no doubt in my mind that coach Miles is deserving of the title. Congratulations coach Miles and lets hope this isn't the only honor you will be bringing home in the days to come.

Honey Badger Don't Care

Tyrann Mathieu, a.k.a."the Honey Badger" doesn't seem to mind being behind in a football game. He just takes the ball and single handily turns the tide. Honey Badger don't care if LSU is down by 14 points. Honey Badger don't care if LSU doesn't have any first downs and it's halftime. Honey Badger don't care about anything. He even scores when he doesn't score. I personally have never seen such an intriguing defensive player to watch. Never have I been so thrilled by a player that I stand up and yell every time he gets near the ball. What a shame  the media is trying to take this young man's achievements on the field and put them on the back burner by continuing to cover stories about the Honey Badger's private life. Does it really matter whether these stories are true? This is a young man in the prime of his life making the best of the moment. Why is it that we are more interested in his naked pictures than we are of his many accomplishments? Not only does Honey Badger not care but I don't care either. I believe this young man has grown this year and will only continue to mature and get better. Short from harming another person, I can't think of any reason to be angry with Mr. Mathieu. Years ago before the invasion of private lives the Honey Badger would have been able to live his life as the young man that he is without the critical judgement of the world. His achievements on the field would have been the focus instead of his personal life. He would be shining like the star that he is without the negative interference of the media. I believe the Honey Badger will continue to move forward and won't allow the negative attention to become a problem. I think like a real honey badger, Tyrann Mathieu will continue to have thick skin and ferocious defensive abilities and will continue to take what he wants.

Tigers Play for the Top

The number 1 ranked LSU Tigers will have to yet again prove themselves Saturday when they play the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC Championship game. This will be the 29th meeting of the two schools with LSU leading the series 15-12-1. Tiger coach, Les Miles, says his team is energized and ready for the game. I have to agree with him. After a terrific game against the Arkansas Razorbacks the Tigers appear to be incredibly healthy and strong. There is such a depth to the Tiger team ( particularly the defense ) that it creates a challenge for the Georgia Bulldogs. The Tiger offense is looking strong with running backs Spencer Ware, Michael Ford, Alfred Blue, and Kenny Hilliard all playing a key role in it's success. Those four players, along with quarterback Jordan Jefferson, have combined for a total of 30 rushing touchdowns. Not bad for a team effort. I believe the Tigers are going to be well prepared for the Bulldogs and Saturday's game will just be another stepping stone towards the National Championship and a perfect season. Whatever the outcome the Tigers will remain number one in my books!

Time for the Tigers to Earn Their Stripes

Forget the "Game of the Century" or last weeks routing of Ole Miss, the game the Tigers are now focusing on is the one on Friday against the Arkansas Razorbacks. This will be the 57th meeting between the two schools and LSU leads the overall series 34-20-02. This has become the Tigers biggest game of the year and if they pull off a victory they will play for the SEC Championship and possibly the National Championship! There are no givens in college football and the Tigers are sure to face a battle with the Hogs. If history has anything to say about this match up we can be assured that it will be a close one. The Tigers have lost the last 3 out of 4 and only by 3 points or less. Again there are no guarantees and the Tigers will need to play what we have characteristically  come to know this season as "LSU football."  If the Tigers can do that then they will roast the Hogs and earn their stripes all in the same day!

Running Wild Tiger Style

The LSU Tiger running backs have been running wild this season. For the first time in fourteen years the Tigers might accomplish three 500 yard rushers in the same season. Sophomores Spencer Ware and Michael Ford have already met the 500 yard mark with 580 and 575 yards respectively. The last member to possibly help achieve this feat is Alfred Blue who is at 371 yards after gaining 119 of those yards against Western Kentucky last week. All three running backs have led LSU's rushing efforts in games this season. Ware has had the lead 5 times, Ford 3, and Blue 2. They all tie the team lead with 6 rushing touchdowns. Adding yet another dimension to the Tiger running core is Freshman Kenny Hilliard who at 240 lbs gives his opponents something to run after. If the Tigers can continue to dominate in the running aspect of the game then it will help them to achieve their goal and perhaps seal their fate as the next National Champions.

Who Will the Starter Be?

A new page in the LSU Tiger's ongoing quarterback saga was written Saturday night when Jordan Jefferson started ahead of Jarrett Lee for the first time this season. No one knows the reasoning behind Coach Miles decision but presumably he knows what he is doing. After all, by the time
Jarrett Lee entered the game the score was 35-9 in LSU's favor. Coach Miles has been incredibly vague when it comes to his quarterback's play. He hasn't really let on to who will or will not be starting and he seems content with the fact that only he knows the answer . The quarterbacks themselves have been silenced and are not allowed to give interviews with the media. Whatever Coach Miles' reasoning, it is working. The Tigers are 9-0 with Lee as the starter and 1-0 with Jefferson. Perhaps Coach Miles wanted to make a point of Lee's turnovers and decided to let him know that they would not be tolerated. Perhaps that point is well taken. Perhaps the Mad Hatter isn't so mad after all.

Wing Takes Flight

If there were ever a thing such as a superstar punter, LSU freshman Brad Wing would be it. Unlike most punters and/or kickers Wing relishes in the spotlight. His contributions to the game are both important and sometimes glamorous. According to his team mates it is Wing's "swagger" that sets him apart from others. That and the fact that Wing has been able to pin his opponents inside the 20 yard line 19 times in 37 punts. Also, he has been good at keeping opponents from returning his punts, they are averaging less than a yard per return. With Wing's help the Tigers have flourished this year. I am not sure if a punter has ever had a more important role in helping his team reach the top. Wing has been an integral part of this LSU team and it is a pleasure to watch this fledgling take flight.

Will the Game Match the Hype?

When LSU and Alabama face each other on November 5th they have some big shoes to fill. From offenses, defenses, special teams, to ticket prices, this game has been billed as one of the biggest games of the century. That's a large order to fill. Will the game live up to the hype? Will the two teams be able to maintain focus and play each other to their best ability? Only Saturday night will tell. As the anxious eyes of fans look on the teams will face each other in one of the largest settings in the history of college football. Hopefully they will be able to stand up to the pressure and perform. Whatever the game is like as long as the Tigers come out victorious this is one fan that will be satisfied. LSU Alabama Game Makes it to Prime Time

The LSU Alabama game has been moved to prime time. Unfortunately it won't be at home in Death Valley. However, with the even match up of these two teams, it shouldn't make a difference. Although the Crimson Tide  leads the series 45-24-5, the Tigers have won 10 of the last 15 games played at Alabama, including four of the last five. The game should live up to the hype. The fact that coach Nick Saban is a part of the LSU Alabama rivalry only makes it all that more interesting. Check out the LSU Alabama commercial by clicking on the following link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3qS5of_9eI. If that doesn't get yo fired up I don't know what will. Only nine days to game time. Geaux Tigers!

SEC Showdown in the South

The stage is set for a mega match up. After taking care of business this weekend both the LSU Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide are ready to battle in what is certain to be one of the most talked about regular season football games of the year. Some people are already calling it the "game of the century." I can't wait to watch the Tigers take the field in Tuscaloosa and wash the dreams of all the Tide fans right down the drain. Although these teams are evenly matched I believe the Tigers will prevail. One of the biggest obstacles that LSU faces are the refs in Tuscaloosa. If they can beat both Alabama and the refs then we will have a winner. Its going to be a tough job but no one ever said playing in the SEC was easy. Geaux Tigers!

Tiger's Gone Wild

Is it me or does it seem that the LSU football team has gone a bit wild? First the issue with Jordan Jefferson now the issue with Tyrann Mathieu, Spencer Ware, and Tharold Simon. What's next? Has Les Miles lost control of the Tiger team or are these young men being just that, young men? Is the media to blame for harping on issues that perhaps would be overlooked if these were just "regular" college kids? One thing is for certain, if these Cubs want to win a National Championship then its time to settle down and become full grown Tigers!

LSU Travels to Tennessee

No. 1 LSU travels to Tennessee this weekend to take on the the Volunteers. The game will be televised nationally by CBS at 2:39pm CST. A sellout crowd of over 102,000 fans is expected at Neyland Stadium. This will be another test for the top ranked Tigers. They are again in the national spotlight and will continue to be so as long as they hold their number one ranking. Although the rest of the Tiger campus will be on a fall break for two days, the Tigers will be working hard to prepare for Saturday's game. "We had a good week so far", head coach Les Miles said following Wednesday's practice. " I enjoy how this team prepares and how they take the field each day with an attitude of getting better. This team has fun and I enjoy the effort in which they work. There's a real want to improve each day. We recognize it's going to be a big game in an opponent's stadium, and we're looking forward to it." The rest of the Tiger Nation will be looking forward to it also. Here's to hoping the Tigers can improve on their overall record with the Volunteers which now stands at 20-8-3. Geaux Tigers!
